In this regard it is helpful to ask a few questions to yourself before deciding a topic for your blog.

Are you passionate about the subject?

The first question you need to ask yourself before blogging is whether you are really interested in the topic you have chosen. It is not simple as it may seem. Since blogging is a long term venture, it is necessary to maintain the passion you have in the onset of the project. Can you see yourself blogging about the topic a few years down the lane? Are you passionate enough? Think it through and make the decision.

If you think you can, continue with the topic or if else, find another one.

Is the niche popular?

The second thing to consider is the popularity of the topic you have chosen to blog about. Given the growth of internet, you can find websites and blogs on a zillion topics yet not all of them are equally popular. Not all of the topics do interest the same amount of people. While you are free to blog about any topic you like, you also need to make sure that it is a fairly popular subject so that you can reach out to a larger group of readers. You also need to look into the competition you might have in the domain.

Do you have enough content?

Another matter to think about when you select a topic to write upon is the content you have. The most common feature of succesful bloggers is their ability to come up with fresh ideas and perspectives in a niche. Do you think you can write regularly produce content about your topic? Or do you have enough resources to stay updated on the new developments regarding your topic? If the answer is yes, you can go forward.

Are there enough income streams in the topic?

The blogs with a business view can only survive if it has a constant revenue. Before you chose a topic, you need to be sure about the range of revenue you can earn with your blog. Like popularity, the income streams will also be different for different topics. Currently the most common way of monetizing blogs is Google Adsense but it is not the only way. Most of the bigger players in the field don't use Adsense. They use direct advertising, selling products, Affiliate programs etc. Every monetizing method is not suitable for every topics. Some topics earn better revenue via Adsense than Affiliate programs. Similarly, many others may perform well in Affiliate programs.
